Trying to figure out how to homestead on a real-person’s income? Oh how we all wish that we inherited acreage and a farm house, but that’s just not reality is it? There are so many things to consider when starting to homestead.
1- Finding Land: Such a tricky thing. It took years for us to find some land that fit our budget and hope of acreage. There were things we compromised on. The house isn’t magazine cover worthy – but the view is! Keep in mind that you are going to have to compromise to get what you want. It is all ultimately about priorities!
2- Nothing needs to be Pinterest worthy! Our chicken coop is made from 2x4s and plywood. There are no chandeliers or wallpaper and you know what? We have happy, healthy, egg-laying chickens! Coops are expensive enough don’t add frill that is just going to be pooped on anyway!
3- Repurpose. We have a duck coop that was once a dog house that we got for free from my dad. It has worked great! Find things you already have and find new uses for them!
4- Cook and bake from scratch. If you have the staples in your pantry (flour, sugar, yeast, baking powder etc.) you can make so many things for way cheaper than you could buy it! Pizza crust, crackers, bread, tortillas and so much more! Once you get started (and read the labels at the store) there’s no going back!
5- Get educated! Yes, YouTube has a lot of free videos but you will learn that one person says one thing and another disagrees. Invest in quality learning. This might be helping a neighbor with a project to learn along the way. Or find a reputable school to learn from. I love the School of Traditional Skills. It’s been worth every penny for us. No, this isn’t sponsored in any way, just sharing what we love!
You can run a homestead without breaking the bank!
