I have been experimenting with sourdough recipes this weekend. My husband can’t handle regular flour anymore so, here we are. I really love the twang of sourdough, don’t you?

This recipe has an overnight rise, so just be aware of that! It is absolutely worth it! And yes, I still consider it fast because the actual work time isn’t too bad. We made it on Saturday and had it ready for Sunday morning before church. If I’m being honest, if I don’t plan for breakfast the night before church, it doesn’t happen. Anyone else?

  • 1/2 cup milk of choice
  • 1/4 cup avocado oil ( or 1 egg)
  • 1/4 cup vanilla yogurt (or melted butter)
  • 1 cup sourdough starter or discard
  • 1/4 cup sugar of choice
  • 2 1/4 cup flour (I use glysophate free sprouted wheat flour)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon maple extract
  • 2/4 teaspoons salt (Redmonds is my go to)

Step 1: Mix the ingredients

Mix all the wet ingredients together first and then add in the dry ingredients. Mix until wet dough is formed.

Step 2: Knead

Knead the dough until it is smooth and elastic.

Step 3: First Rise

Cover with a damp towel and let rise until doubled. Overnight is best! It will be a slow rise, so best to not keep checking on it.

Step 4: Roll and Form Donuts

Roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch – 1 inch thickness. Then use a cup or lid to cut into the size you’d like. I used a mason jar lid. Then use your finger to create the inner hole of the donut.

Step 5: Second Rise

Set on your baking tray and place in a warm spot until the donuts have increased in size approximately 1-2 hours.

Step 6: Bake!

Heat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake the donuts until they are starting to turn golden but are still soft. Start with 11 minutes and add more time as needed. Transfer to a cooling rack and let cool for 10-15 minutes before glazing.

Step 7: Glaze

Mix the glaze ingredients together to taste. Start with 1 cup milk of choice and 2 cups of powdered sugar. Mix and add more powdered sugar as needed to reach the consistency and sweetness you prefer. Add maple syrup to taste. Dip the donuts in the glaze and add chopped pecans to the top. Let sit for another 10 minutes for the glaze to set.
